Terms of service.
Plain language. No surprises. These terms govern your use of Shima's products and services.
The basics
Shima is a language learning platform operated by Shima Learning Inc., a Canadian company based in Victoria, BC. By using Shima's app, website, or services, you agree to these terms.
We've written these to be readable, not to obscure your rights. If something is unclear, ask us.
What you can expect from us
A functional product. We'll make reasonable efforts to keep Shima available, accurate, and useful. The app is designed to work offline, so your ability to practice shouldn't depend on our servers being up.
Honest communication. If something changes—pricing, features, these terms—we'll tell you clearly and give you reasonable time to decide how to proceed.
Respect for your data. See our Privacy Policy for details. The short version: your data is yours, we don't sell it, and we collect as little as possible.
What we ask of you
Use the service as intended. Shima is for language learning. Don't use it to harm others, reverse-engineer the platform, or redistribute our content.
Respect intellectual property. The drill content, audio, and software are the property of Shima Learning Inc. or our licensors. Your license to use them is personal and non-transferable, unless you're on an institutional plan with its own agreement.
Provide accurate information. If you create an account or contact us, please give us accurate information. We won't ask for more than we need.
Institutional deployments
Institutional customers operate under a separate deployment agreement that governs data handling, content licensing, service levels, and reporting. These general terms apply where the deployment agreement is silent.
Content and accuracy
Our drill content is developed by language professionals and editorially reviewed. We take accuracy seriously, but language is complex—if you find an error, we'd genuinely appreciate hearing about it.
Shima is a practice tool, not a certification authority. Progress in the app doesn't constitute formal language proficiency certification.
Availability and changes
We may update the app, add or remove features, or modify these terms over time. We'll aim to improve things, not take them away. If we make changes that materially affect your use, we'll notify you.
We don't guarantee uninterrupted service—no one honestly can—but we design for reliability and offline capability specifically so your practice isn't dependent on connectivity.
Limitation of liability
To the extent permitted by law, Shima Learning Inc.'s liability is limited to the amount you've paid us in the twelve months preceding any claim. We're not liable for indirect or consequential damages. We know this section exists in every terms page—we include it because we have to, not because we expect problems.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia, Canada. Any disputes will be resolved in the courts of British Columbia.
